NonY interview on Spirit, WCG, and more! (Ask your own questions inside)
By: scforall - Published 9/25/2008 9:22:00 PM
Hello NonY. Can you please state your name, age, and how long you have been playing Starcraft for the fans?

- My name is Tyler Wasieleski, I¡¯m 22, and I¡¯ve been playing StarCraft off and on for about 6 years now.

When did you decide to take StarCraft seriously? How long after that did you decide to model your play specifically upon pro gamers?

- I¡¯ve taken StarCraft seriously for WCG USA in 2006 and 2007 but I did not aspire to become a pro gamer until early 2008. I immediately studied pro gamers¡¯ play to understand what it takes to be a successful pro gamer. I have always practiced with the long term in mind. I want to build all my skills and become a complete player.

Speaking of WCG, what are your predictions for the event?

- I¡¯m pretty confident in myself. I think IdrA and I will have some great games against each other and one of us will claim first. There will be several other great players there that are capable of taking wins from anyone, but it¡¯s impossible to predict. WCG USA can¡¯t occur without a few upsets.

You just made it to the finals of the Spirit tournament to find potential pro gamers to come to Korea. The other semi-final has ClouD vs. Machine. Who do you think will win this match to meet u in the finals?

- I think ClouD will win. But I think Machine will play well and have a good showing.

What do you predict as the outcome of a potential NonY vs. ClouD finals?

- I will win. I¡¯m eager to win in a very convincing fashion, but I¡¯ll settle for a win either way.

The Korea pro gaming scene has evolved to a point where very young players dominate. Teams always choose the youngest talent they can find. At 22, you would be considered somewhat old. What makes you a better choice than a younger player?

- I am not old to the point where my mind or hands have slowed down -- far from it of course. So the younger players have no advantage there. But with my age and experience in the world, I am better prepared mentally for the journey of becoming a pro gamer. Younger players are more likely to burn out or be unable to handle pro gaming emotionally, or perhaps their opinions on pro gaming will change as they become adults. But I am solid.

If chosen to go to Korea, all joking aside, would you be prepared to scrub toilets?

- I would be prepared to commit to whatever lifestyle my experienced coaches and managers decide is best. If I¡¯m asked to do chores, of course I am prepared to do them.

eSTRO cleaning time takes place from about 9:30am to 10:30am. Artosis sleeping time doesn¡¯t end until 11:30am. Do you have what it takes to sneak into my room and sweep the floors/fold the blankets without waking me up?

- Hahaha I heard Artosis works very hard, so he must sleep heavily, and thus it would be easy.

Good answer. I¡¯ll put in a good word for you. If you got to live the dream as a pro gamer, what would be your immediate and long-term goals?

- My immediate goal would be to pass Courage and get my pro gamer license. My long term goal would be to win a Pro League match. I¡¯ve had a lot of experience with team sports and the satisfaction of contributing to the team is amazing.

Any thoughts on SC2?

- I just hope it¡¯s good for e-Sports. But the game is going to change SO much through beta, and through its first few years of release when there are balance patches going on, that it makes no sense for me to worry about it now.

Well thanks for the interview. GL in your upcoming events!

How would you describe yourself? For example:

Are you more the type of guy who needs mostly none stop action in the day to not get bored or someone who likes moments of silence and relaxation in breaks or at the end of the day and likes to pass over stuff in your mind?

Do you enjoy more to have many friends but maybe not that deep known or instead more a few friendships that are more intensive?

Are you prepared of the possibility of having socially a hard spot because Koreans especially progamers are known that they got a unique state of beeing monsters in Broodwar outside of Korea and so you get less positive feedback and social backing if you are successfull in "touching their crown" in Broodwar by keeping up with them?

How you came to your first game experience and what was your first own kind of videogame?

Thanks =)

Hey Nony, best of luck in the Spirit Finals! I have a few questions for you:

If you could pick any of the proteams to play for, which team would you pick and why?
If it were possible after your playing career, would you ever consider staying and coaching a team, or would you be ready to move on to the next stage of your life at that time?

Thanks!

Thanks!

I don't really have a favorite team. I might pick MBC because Sea has been so excited to get a foreigner and I'm sure if Sea is excited, the whole team would be happy about it. But maybe other teams and players would be equally excited. I think I'd either pick Lecaf OZ because they have so many amazing star players or I'd pick SKT1 because being a Protoss on a team with Best and Bisu has got to be good. But every team is so nice nowadays that you can't go wrong.

I don't think coaching would be for me. I would prefer to stay in e-Sports but I don't think coaching would be very high on my list. But who knows! That would be a long way off and I'd have learned a lot more by then.

Do you think you will encounter the same problems that Idra and Draco had (according to their own accounts)? If so, how will you overcome them (language barrier, rigorous practice schedule, etc)?

I feel like I can become great friends with my teammates despite the language barrier. It's really difficult for me to know exactly what caused problems for Draco at OGN and IdrA at e-Stro (in other words, whose fault it was, if anyone's), so perhaps I'll be in for the same surprise, but I'll go into it being charismatic and friendly rather than being all business and a loner.

What would you be giving up in your life if you were chosen to go to Korea and you accepted the offer? (girlfriend, school, work, etc.)

I would be separated from my girlfriend but we would maintain our relationship. It's something we've talked about and are prepared to do. I have no other career lined up. I would be putting a hold on my higher education but that is something that I can return to and finish at any point in my life.

At the moment who do you practce with? how many games do you play each day ? What is a typical day in the life of Tyler Wasieleski at the moment ?

I generally practice about 3-4 hours against iCCup players and spend an additional 3-4 hours studying my replays, watching VODs, and creating and practicing builds in single player. If I was able to set up some practice with good players, I would spend more time playing, but I've been unable to do so. As it is, I see my greatest improvements during my study time, playing in single player. You can see how it'd be easy for me to improve quite a bit in Korea just by changing the nature of my practice. Every time I've played a progamer, I think 'this is what I really need!! give me 10 more games and I'll improve more in 3 hours than I have in the past week' but I'm simply denied practice from every progamer I've asked T.T The language barrier can be difficult to overcome.

nony, quite a long time ago, I remember being in a clan with you, (iC) if I remember correctly. you were certainly one of the better players in it, although not even near the skill level you are now. Why do you want to be a progamer, is it for the fame? is it just because you're competitive? is it because you want to do something you enjoy for a living? if that's it, do you worry that you will burnout and the game will lose it's fun? haha, I'll have to assume it's not for the money anyways.

Yes I remember us in (iC)! I want to be a progamer because I love StarCraft and I'm intrigued by the e-Sports industry. I want to find out how good I can be at StarCraft and entertain other people who love the game while I'm at it. Earning money isn't really an issue and I'm not scared of burning out at all.

Hi NonY, I have some questions....

1. Who do you think is the most dangerous Protoss progamer right now? What about his play is impressive to you?
2. It sounds like progaming would be more of a diversion than a career for you. What do you want to do if/when you finish your professional gaming career (yes, I think you'll probably have one :P)?
3. What do you think of Korean women?

1. Stork. He's just so solid. He has good gameplans and he doesn't make huge mistakes. If he had just won a couple of finals, people would be saying 'the next bonjwa?' but he has come up short there. He will cheese, he will defend cheese, he will macro, he will micro, he will win.
2. I'd love to work in the e-Sports industry my whole life. So if I can't cut it as a progamer, I'd look at all the other associated jobs before I decided to pursue a different industry. I would probably go to law school.
3. I'm sure they're great but I would be in Korea to game, not to be with them!

Assume you get chosen, if there was a second choice, who would you want it to be?

Really tough question! I guess it depends on the results of the tournament. But I'm not really well-acquainted with the amateur scene to be perfectly honest. I guess I'd have to go with Cloud. A lot of thought went into that decision that I'm not going to type out, but I assure you that it's a very close decision! I just hate when people dodge the question so I feel like I should answer the question directly and just say Cloud.

Last question: Are you pissed that you weren't the first name called for BlizzCon ?

Ah, well, any time when there is a big event that is invite-only and therefore doesn't have qualifiers where spots are earned, people are going to be frustrated. It's so nice when you get the invite, but so frustrating when you don't. You just wish you could compete for it straight up. But invitational events will always exist and that's just something that players have to deal with. I have no hard feelings about it. I'll just have to play so well in everything else that I'll 100% get invited next time! ;)

Do your family / friedns know about your aspirations ? Are they comfortable with it ? What are they saying ? What are your parents saying ?

Yeah, everyone knows and they think it's pretty cool. I think my parents would prefer that I pursue something that is a bit more established and reliable, but they understand my desire. I think it's important for people to really try to do something with their lives. There can be more to life than getting a paycheck to pay your bills. If you are lucky enough to be in a position where you can pursue something other than the 'sure thing' then you should go for it. The world could use more people like that! You at least owe it to the people who are not fortunate enough to have such options!

Favourite Pro and any foreigner you looked at while still a noob ?

NaDa has been my favorite pro, though I always felt like I should have a favorite Protoss, which was always Reach and then Bisu. I was never much of a Nal_rA fan because I had taken a break from StarCraft when rA was doing his best. I still feel like Bisu is a really great player who has bad luck during games, or he is just one tiny step away from being really dominant. But he's been getting mediocre results for so long now that it makes me sad :( Come on Bisu!!

I haven't ever really looked up to a foreigner much. I thought it was cool in general how certain people could enter a crowded channel and everyone would be like 'wow, it's him!' but I never was a big fan of any single player.
