Ask Daniel Lee about Starcraft and e-Sports
By: scforall - Published 9/9/2008 1:43:00 AM

Alright folks, I know a lot of you have been asking about this over MSN, in the forums, and even a surprisingly large number of emails, so we¡¯re going to spend the time and make sure everyone can get their questions asked.

Daniel Lee, the former AMD Dream Team and Hexatron owner, and eSTRO pro team head coach is making this his official `Ask Daniel` thread where you can ask him anything related to Starcraft e-Sports in Korea, and he will answer all of your questions to the best of his ability.

While he spent a lot of his time as a head coach, Daniel used to own and manage the Hexatron and more notably AMD Dream Team before he sold it to IEG, which is when the eSTRO team was born. Throughout the years, he¡¯s mentored players such as Grrrr, Elky, Legionnaire, and UpMagic. Listing these selected players alone shows that he is more than qualified to be asked anything about the scene.

To get an idea of things you should be asking, please read the examples below:

1. Can you tell us what it was like being in the Starcraft pro scene for 9 years?
2. How much has the Starcraft pro scene changed in the past years in your eyes, from when it was just starting out to now?
3. What was your favorite moment in e-Sports, and why?

To ask your question and have it be answered by Daniel, please make a post in this thread and he¡¯ll reply within one working day.

If you have any other questions for Daniel that you think shouldn¡¯t go in this section then feel free to email him at iegstaff@scforall.com.

Who do you think will win the spirit tournament?

Hi Dan,
what are your thoughts about the Zerg "Queen"? Do you think there are any viable strategies for a zergplayer to use them effectively...or is the micro involved not worth the outcome?
Greetings
Alexis

Alright cool if you do come I'll look forward to meeting you. I know you're an ex eStro coach, but I was wondering what your thoughts were on the situation for KTF, with Reach in the Air Force and Nal_Ra retiring to become a commentator. It seems like their leadership just left.
Also, can you tell us what teams in particular are looking to pick up foreigners?

I am not at liberty to say right now.

¾È³çÇϼ¼¿ä, Âû°è½Ê´Ï°¡? ¤»¤» Àú´ÂÇѱ¹»ç¶÷ ¿ö³Êºñ :P. Well anyway, wassup Dan! I wanted to ask you why do you think your ex-team :P doesn't perform as well as some of the other teams? I'm sure this question has been asked many times, so I'll try and approach it on a different level. Basically we all know that the skill gap between progamers is extremely small. Often times, we see a battle on a psychological level, where the players character shows the most, whether he's perserverent and things of the sort, and that's why so many 3-0's or at least a few happen, and also probably 0-2 comebacks (GGPlay being the most recent I believe, or at least on an important stage), it's all about the players character and their will to go further, because quite frankly, we can safely say that most of the progamers are equal in skill level or almost, it's just that their mood and mindset decide if they're doing good or not. I think a good example of this is savior, where you would see him rushing 10 minute hives vs builds such as fast 7 rax (FBH and whatnot) and other builds where he failed horribly, simply because he's used to winning with it and is too stubborn to change his style (a bit like vs Bisu in the MSL final). Do you think that maybe it is the same with your team, I mean I'm pretty sure you've talked about this with them a lot, but maybe since they're ''used'' to losing that they have a difficult time moving foward, although they have made progress in the past few years. I've already asked the CJ coach how he approached these situations, where a player is lacking confidence and whatnot, but I'd love to know how you would approach such a thing, and just really point out what eStro is lacking to move foward. Sorry for this question being so long, and probably incoherent because I had some trouble finding the exact words I wanted to express my thoughts :P but yeah :D, any thoughts would be appreciated, °¨»çÇÕ´Ï´Ù^^

Are RANDOM players allowed in the pro-league and individual competitions in korea now?

In one of the 'spirit games'.. Pj vs Pusan or Pj vs Sea[Shield].
You talk about random players of the past.
And I was under the impression that it had infact been made rules in the korean tournaments to restrict players from playing random, has this been lifted?

I've always been random since 98, so I respect thoose players the most.. wish there was some random players around still ^^ (though terran is most fun ^^))

ps.. turn down your mike, or make artosis turn his up, or hold your mic abit further away.. lol ;)

Random user are allowed to participate, there never was an offical policy forbidding them to participate in leagues. I don't think you will be seeing any random users in the future, it is just too hard to master all the races.

Out of all the foreigners you have worked with in the past, which one had the most potential (even if it was unrealized)?

I would have to say Rekrul, he was young and if he applied himself 100% I think he would have made it.

Daniel Lee. I have a friend from the University of Toronto in Canada. He' s a big gaming enthusiast and has created an SC club at the college and helped organize and commentate events there. Is there any advice you could give him on trying to develop esports in Canada? What advice would you give him on attracting sponsors and advertising events in the community? Are fliers enough for a start-up event? His MSN is ill_sue_you@hotmail.com if you'd like to contact him personally.

I would advise him to contact the local media and get them to cover the events, more the better. Whatever it takes, beg if you have to. Do what you can to sensationalize the event, other words make the event newsworthy (this is your homework, figure it out). Second approach sponsors and let them know, such and such media will cover the event. Before you approach sponsors make sure you have a nice proposal prepared for them. Total up the media exposure the event will get and lay it out nicely to the sponsors. If you want let¡¯s say, AMD to sponsor your event, you tell them you will decorate the entire event venue with AMD logos, floors, ceilings, the walls even on computers itself, even bunch of banners everywhere and anywhere you can put it, DO IT! Simply plaster the venue with AMD logos. This way any photos, video footages the media might give the event, it will naturally be in the actual articles, and news clips. Make sure any interviews the participants give mentions AMD(AMD t-shirt would be nice). Lastly after the event, keep up with all the exposure the event receives for the sponsors and make a nice report for them. For example, how much air time on tv news did the event get? How many articles?, magazines? Convert this into money and show it to the sponsors. I WISH YOU BEST OF LUCKS! I hope this helps out a little.^^;;;
